Background

Founded in 1956 as the Industrial Sports Clubs Association, this unique body quickly established itself as the conduit for Club Managers to meet together and network associated problems and solutions. In 1963 the Association held its first Annual Conference in Paignton, Devon.

1972 saw a change in direction and name to the Recreation Managers' Association of Great Britain and the ever increasing demands for education and leadership led to the RMA being at the forefront of Club Management throughout the UK. Forging links with other similar organisations in Britain and abroad, including the Club Managers' Association of America, Club Managers' Association of Europe, Business in Sport and Leisure, Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management, Central Council for Physical Recreation, Sport England, and many others.

The RMA was without doubt a leading force in Club Management. After 50 years the BICM was formed to further enhance the reputation and heritage of the predecessor organisations and move forward as the leading organisation for Club Managers.
